Income Tax Return (ITR) filing deadline extended

In a surprise last-minute move, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has extended the deadline for filing the income tax returns for this year.

Read on for complete details.

The New Deadline

Via a circular no. 225/163/2012/ITA.II dated July 31st 2012, the CBDT has extended the deadline for filing ITR by 1 month – the new deadline is now 31st August 2012.

You can see the circular here.

This extra-ordinary extension has been granted in view of the wide spread power failures throughout the country.

This is especially relevant because e-filing of ITRs has been mandatory for a large number of income tax assessees from this year.

Good News…

If you have postponed filing of your income tax return so far, this is great news for you. Remember, late filing of ITR has its own drawbacks – see “Missed the income tax return (ITR) filing deadline of 31st July?” for more details.
